Maria Tomasula: Paintings
Tomasula' vibrant, luminous paintings boast an eerie beauty in their tightly rendered trompe l'oil still lives. Flowers, fruit, meat, insects, and other natural objects are portrayed within shallow spaces reminiscent of early Christian icons, their semblance to martyrs and saints becoming metaphors for human spirituality. Hooks, needles, and nails pierce and mount the objects like specimens while rope and string bind and suspend. Droplet of water and glass beads sparkle amidst the pierced flesh of pieces of fruit and the stitched petals of flowers. The appeal of Tomaula's meticulous rendering and lively color are balanced against the inherent violence of peeling, binding, and piercing, resulting in rich artworks that explore religion, life and death, and the wonder of the natural world. This exhibition features approximately 20 new works by Maria Tomasula. Tomasula currently teaches in the department of Art History and Design at the University of Notre Dame. The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2574. www.muskegonartmuseum.org

Steppin' In It - in concert
The playhouse welcomes back to West Michigan in the vintage instruments and a sound that brings listeners back to the days of old-time radio. Upright Bassist Dominic Suchyta and multi-instrumentalist brothers Andy & Joe Wilson compliment the strong songwriting talents of singer/songwriter Josh Davis, who's haunting vocals paint a picture of rural and urban Michigan breaking its blue-collar back under troubled times. Love Letters
Back for an encore performance, Betsy and Danny grace the stage as Andrew and Melissa in Love Letters. Andrew Make peace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, the continue to exchange letters throughout the boarding school and college years - where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school and Melissa flunks out of a series of "good schools". While Andy is off at war, Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, become a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and eventually is elected to the US Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy's last letter, written to her mother after Melissa's untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave to each other over the years - physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. The event will be at 7:30 pm in the Beardsley Theater in the Frauenthal Center. Tickets are available through Star Tickets Plus 1-800-585-3737 or the Frauenthal Box Office M-F 11 am to 6 pm.
