Edward Curtis: Selections from The North American Indian
In 1907, photographer Edward Curtis began work on a series of books and portfolios titled The North American Indian. The intent of the project was to document, both in writing and photography, the lives and cultures of the tribes living in the United States. The final project was comprised of 20 leather bound books, each with an accompanying photographic portfolio, for a total of 2,228 illustrations. The North American Indian was available as a subscription, but due to the price, only about 220 were ever produced. The Hackley Public Library opened a subscription in 1908 and completed its set in 1930. In 1976 the complete set was transferred to the Muskegon Museum of Art as a permanent loan. This is the second of two exhibitions that will display highlights from this extensive collection. The exhibit is at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. Inspired: The Corky Tuttle Glass Legacy
The Muskegon Museum of Art’s ongoing interest in collecting and exhibiting contemporary studio glass is due, in no small part, to the early efforts of C. Corcoran Tuttle. "Corky" Tuttle owned a gallery in downtown Muskegon and was an early proponent of the American studio glass movement. Through her connections, Corky coordinated with other Museum supporters to acquire studio glass for the permanent collection, and donated her first glass piece in 1980.. Painted Nails and Fairytales and The Adventures of Pookie Magee
This exhibition consists of works created by two emerging artists, Eleanor Gatewood and Stephanie Rose. Rose’s work explores issues of female identity by referencing cultural stereotypes and archetypes in order to critically examine how women are traditionally portrayed in society. For Rose this concept is often presented humorously in the form of staged color photographs, which place commonly identifiable scenarios in an unusual context. Gatewood’s work explores the adult relationship with “play” and child-like rationale by presenting the viewer with a narrative of life through the eyes of her invented character named Pookie MaGee. Gatewood offers these images through hand-held stereographic goggles, which allow the viewer to slip inside her character and in her words, “animate the living spirit of youth.”
There will be a free public reception on Monday, March 22, 2010 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. At 6:30pm Eleanor and Stephanie will be giving a gallery talk discussing the work in the exhibition. Overbrook Art Gallery regular hours 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday –Friday. The Overbrook Gallery is located at Muskegon Community College, 221 S. Quarterline Road. Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall: Art Inspired by Fairy Tales
Artwork by a select group of artist is featured in this themed invitational exhibition organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art. Folk and fairy tales are found in cultures around the world and continue to fascinate, both emotionally and intellectually. They have been altered and adapted by following generations as tastes and cultures develop and change. Illustrations of these tales have come to define them as much as the words, and many children know these stories only through animated movies and picture books. This exhibition invites artists to turn their hand to fairy tales and create art that speaks to the contemporary impression of the stories. The exhibit is at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org

Shout Freedom!
Photo League Selections from the Columbus Museum of Art Gritty, documentary images of urban life photographed by members of the New York Photo League, a group formed in 1938 whose membership was comprised of early pioneers in the documentary photography field. Novice and professional photographers alike used their camera lens to artistically capture a defining moment in our nation’s history as well as make statements on the social and economic climate of the era. The Photo League was one of the most influential photography movements of the 20th century but was surrounded in controversy and conjecture. It is also paradoxically one of the least known contributors in the history of photography. This exhibition will act as an educational piece for students and community members who are not familiar with its historical significance and the role it plays in contemporary documentary photography. The Enduring Gifts of Martin A. Ryerson
As the MMA moves ever closer to its Centennial, special attention will be focused on great Museum advocates, sharing donated artworks and personal histories with the public that have shaped the past, present, and future of this institution and community. The year 1932 marked the 20th anniversary of the Hackley Art Gallery (now the MMA). In March of that year, director Frank Atwood Almy contacted Chicago art collector and Grand Rapids native, Martin A. Ryerson, Jr., whose family was prominent in the lumber era here, and encouraged him to donate a work of art to the Museum. As a result, Ryerson gifted six major European and American paintings to the MMA before he died in the fall of 1932, including works by French Impressionists including Alfred Sisley, Armand Guillaumin, and Paul Signac; representing “a field entirely untouched” in the collection, Almy noted. The Ryerson estate gifted eight additional pictures in 1938, providing an enduring and significant body of work. Museum admission is $5 (free admission on Thursday.) We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball
Original paintings by award winning artist and author Kadir Nelson, who spent seven years researching, writing, and creating the handsome paintings included in the brilliantly illustrated book, WE ARE THE SHIP:
The Story of Negro League Baseball. This exhibition is the story of Negro Leagues—the story of gifted athletes and determined owners; of racial discrimination and international sportsmanship; of fortunes won and lost; of triumphs and defeats on and off the field and is a perfect mirror for the social and political history of black America in the first half of the twentieth century. But most of all, the story of the Negro Leagues is about hundreds of unsung heroes who overcame segregation, hatred, terrible conditions, and low pay to do the one thing they loved more than anything else in the world: play ball. Underwritten by the Verizon Foundation. Museum admission is $5 (free admission on Thursday.) The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. Webster in Downtown Muskegon. Flippers, Buzzers and Bells: Pinball Machines from a Michigan Collector
Countless collectors worldwide, West Michigan included, enthusiastically treasure pinball machines. Flippers, Buzzers, and Bells, organized by MMA staff, will exhibit as many as ten machines, primarily from the 1980s and 1990s. They have been selected (with an eye to art museum aesthetics) for their design savvy, sound quality, and cultural significance. But it’s not all hands-off! This MMA show will identify the Museum as a major center of summer fun in Muskegon. Through the collector’s generosity, two of the machines will be available for play during regular MMA hours, so come on in and show us your pinball wizardry! Underwritten by AGS. Museum admission is $5 (free admission on Thursday.) The Muskegon Museum of Art is located at 296 W. Webster in Downtown Muskegon. For more information call 231-720-2570. www.muskegonartmuseum.org
