Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Witness for the Prosecution"
Only the grand dame of mystery, Agatha Christie, could have conceived of this suspenseful courtroom thriller and topped it off with a triple-flip ending. Over the strenuous objections of his private nurse, Miss Plimsoll, Sir Wilfred Robarts, a master barrister in ill health, takes on the case of Leonard Vole, a young man accused of murdering a wealthy old woman. The testimony of his wife, Christine, should ensure his acquittal, but she is called, instead, as a witness for the prosecution. For a fee, a mysterious woman provides Sir Wilfred with some damning evidence and testimony against Christine, and the plot twists and turns keep coming until the dramatic climax when Leonard and Christine confront each other in the courtroom. Feeding the Soul of the City Concert
St. Paul's Episcopal Church is pleased to continue this great concert series. Feeding the Soul of the City lunch hour concerts began in February 2001 as a memorial to local musician John Robert Welsh. This unique venue provides a pleasant and casual respite from the work and school day by offering fine music in a beautiful setting. It is a perfect noon hour event for downtown business people, senior citizens, school music classes and home schoolers. Concerts are held from 12:15-12:45pm. These free concerts are very well attended and everyone is welcome whether or not you are a member of St. Paul's. Today's performance is the Grand Valley State University Early Music Ensemble. They play early music played on period instruments. Concertgoers are invited to bring a lunch to eat during the concert. Native American Super Saturday Free Family Fun Day
Second Saturdays of the month are made for fun at the MMA. Each Super Saturday features a different theme and free activities and admission. Underwritten by the Alcoa Foundation, supporting Howmet communities. In April, the Muskegon Museum of Art and the Lakeshore Museum Center collaborate. Explore the history and culture of American Indians with activities at both museums. Earn a stamp for four different activities at the museums. After you earn all of the four activity stamps, you will be eligible to enter a drawing to win Kaya, an American Girl® doll representing the Nez Perce tribe, and additional Native American inspired objects. Entry forms must be dropped off at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Galaxies
Timothy Ferris, noted author of numerous books on cosmology, takes us into spaces on a cosmic journey through the stars of the Milky Way and onwards to the galaxies beyond. The Sound of Music
When a postulant, Maria, proves to be too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain, George Von Trapp. Her rapport with the children and her generous spirit capture the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon, the newlyweds find that the Nazis have taken over Austria and now demand that the Captain report immediately for service in the German Navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains into Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides the inspirational finale. This final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become America’s most beloved musical, and many songs from the show have become standards including Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and the title song. Join us Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 10am to 4pm for a fun-filled day of free activities and events for kids of all ages. This is a No-Cost Fun Day for families and youth! We've got a variety of music and performing arts, a health fair to browse, sports activities, exhibits with free goodies, and a food and beverage court sponsored by local restaurants. Mayfest brings together our community's civic, ethnic, social, and service organizations in a day-long spring festival of activity and cultural enrichment. Its purpose is to invite community residents to enjoy informal family style entertainment and active participation in the unique community college setting. Children's activities include: Big Rig Driving Simulator, petting zoo 11am-3pm, Train Rides, Planetarium Show - "Light Years from Andromeda", story telling, face painting, bungee run, dog obedience demo's, karate demo's, games, jungle gym equipment, and much more! Rock The Coast
Rock the Coast is a two-day event full of Christian music, as many rides as you can stand, and tons of friends! Held each year at Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park, you'll ride all day and rock out for two days straight. This year's performers include Hawk Nelson, Superchick, John Reuben, and Bread of Stone. Arts & Craft Fair in the Park
This three day fair will be held in conjunction with the Pow Wow in Hackley Park, downtown Muskegon. Artists and crafters from all around the state will be showing their works in wood crafting, silver. candle making, stained glass, baby clothes, dog treats, scrapbooking, handmade soaps, Indian crafts, and more. Pow Wow in the Park
This two day event is held in Hackley Park, downtown Muskegon. Grand Entry, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and Sunday at 12 Noon. Instructions in Pow Wow dancing, intertribal dancing, Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, Grass Dance, Sneak Up, Blanket Dance and more. All dancers are welcome. Feeding the Soul of the City Concert
St. Paul's Episcopal Church is pleased to continue this great concert series. Feeding the Soul of the City lunch hour concerts began in February 2001 as a memorial to local musician John Robert Welsh. This unique venue provides a pleasant and casual respite from the work and school day by offering fine music in a beautiful setting. It is a perfect noon hour event for downtown business people, senior citizens, school music classes and home schoolers. Concerts are held from 12:15-12:45pm. These free concerts are very well attended and everyone is welcome whether or not you are a member of St. Paul's. Today's performance is the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra Brass Ensemble. 3rd Annual Run for Wings, 5K Run/Walk
The 3rd Annual "Run for Wings" 5K event is one of the flattest and fastest courses in West Michigan. The first 100 registrants will receive a technical T-shirt. As a registered runner/walker you will also receive a free pancake breakfast. In addition to the 5K festivities, the annual Wings of Mercy pancake breakfast has become quite an event and has been a tradition now for a number of years including plane rides, helicopter rides, antique cars, and other family events. All proceeds (including 100% of your registration fee) will be going to the local West Michigan chapter of Wings of Mercy. Wings of Mercy is a non-profit volunteer pilot organization. Galaxies
Timothy Ferris, noted author of numerous books on cosmology, takes us into spaces on a cosmic journey through the stars of the Milky Way and onwards to the galaxies beyond. "Galaxies" is presented like a nature walk on the grandest of scales. Starting with our night sky, our journey turns to the distant stars, star clusters, and nebulae within our galaxy. The voyage of discovery continues through extra-galactic space onwards to the distant clusters of galaxies. Dragonfest
The week of Dragonfest kicks off with a free movie, “Dragons, A Fantasy Made Real.” The movie is sponsored by Harbor Light Credit Union, and is produced by the Discovery Channel and Narrated by Patrick Stewart. The show is free, and will run Monday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howmet Playhouse. Also beginning Monday, the Nuveen Center will host a week of hands-on art classes: Dragon Puppet Making, Damsel and Knight Hat Making, 3D Dragons, and Dragon drawing. On Thursday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m., the Book Nook & Java Shop in Montague will host Dragon story hour. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, June 17 – 19, Nuveen’s Youth Theatre group will present a collage of dragon themed plays, music, and dance at the Howmet Playhouse. The pre-show fun begins at 7 p.m., with outdoor music by local musicians and drawing by professional cartoon artist Scott Rosema. Thursday evening will feature singer/guitarist Mike Snell performing dragon songs. On Friday, Andrew Goldstein will also perform dragon songs. Summer Celebration Air Show
Muskegon Summer Celebration reaches new heights in 2010 with a two-day air show over Muskegon Lake which makes Heritage Landing the ideal location to enjoy the show. Seven different aircraft, ranging from wing-walker Ashley Battles strapped to a 450 Stearman to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, will perform both days beginning at 12:30 p.m. Other performers include the F-16 West Coast Demonstration Team"Viper West"--The 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah; B-25 Mitchell Bomber of World War II; A-10 Thunderbolt II, 47th Fighter Squadron, 917th Wing, Barksdale AFB, Louisiana; United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration; Team MS760 Aerobatics; Billy Werth and his Pitts S2C; Greg Shelton Barnstorming in his Stearman Bi Plane; and Bill Stein. Great Thursday night race starting and ending at the North Muskegon Athletic Complex. The 5K Walk starts at 6:30 p.m. and follows the 5K run course. All walkers will be scored and overall awards will be presented the the first male and female finisher. Two European Tall Ships Coming to Muskegon
The Bark Europa from the Netherlands and Roald Amundsen from Germany will be stopping in Muskegon August 19 - 22. Visitors are welcome to come down and tour both ships for a donation. They will be available for tours on Friday from 10:00am - 5:00pm. The Roald Amundsen will depart at 12:00pm on Saturday and the Europa will continue tours from 10:00am - 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Europa will then depart Monday morning. The two ships are in the Great Lakes as part of the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE 2010 Race to Save the Great Lakes. Both ships will be docked at 560 Mart Street in downtown Muskegon. Festival of Trees
This fundraiser for the Muskegon Museum of Art features a large display of themed holiday trees, sponsored by area businesses and individuals. The professionally decorated trees, along with many other items of holiday décor and gift items, can be purchased through silent auction. Holiday films, Teddy Bear Breakfast and much more.
