Over the course of a single night, mostly spent in a single room apartment, a drummer in a jazz band and an edgy young woman play a flirting game of mutual mistrust and attraction, but their underlying need to find each other trustworthy is only thinly veiled behind their nonchalance. Cinema Sunday: Drunken Angel (Yoidore tenshi)
The Muskegon Museum of Art is pleased to continue its series of film screenings that focus on exploring the art of cinema. Today's film is Drunken Angel (Yoidore tenshi.) Director: Akira Kurosawa, 1948 (98 minutes.) Japanese with English subtitles. In this dramatic allegory of post-war Japan, the drunken, self-loathing, but samaritan Dr. Sanada tries to enable the spiritual and physical recovery of the human debris who live around a diseased-ridden sump in a forgotten slum of Tokyo. When Matsunaga, a violent gangster, is discovered to be tubercular, the two become locked in a moral battle; Matsunaga denying the weakness implied by his illness, and Dr. Sanada struggling to prove to them both that even a bad man’s life is worth saving. Toshiro Mifune’s breakthrough performance as Matsunaga led Kurosawa to rethink the film midway: “I decided to turn him loose." he said. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art (296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon). The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. Cinema Sunday: My Way Home
The Muskegon Museum of Art is pleased to continue its series of film screenings that focus on exploring the art of cinema. My Way Home, Director: Bill Douglas, 1978 (126 minutes) (Preceded by the short film
My Ain Folks, 1973) Bill Douglas’ autobiographical films recount his harrowing experiences growing up in a rural mining town in 1940s Scotland. Confronted with material and emotional abandonment, confused and thwarted by the vicious world of adults, Jamie becomes increasing withdrawn as he is shuffled between his dysfunctional family and incarceration in a children’s home. It isn’t until his call-up for national service in Egypt that he finally discovers the release of friendship and encouragement for his imagination. At the turning point in this sparse and beautifully honest document, his simple declaration “I want to do something” splits the fervid air like a crack of thunder. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. The movie is free with museum membership or with museum admission. For more information call 231-720-2571. www.muskegonartmuseum.org

Cinema Sunday: A Man Escaped
A Man Escaped (Un condamné à mort s’est échappé) Director: Robert Bresson, 1956 (99 mins.) French with English subtitles Free with Museum Membership or with Museum Admission. Bresson’s film tells the true story of Resistance leader Andre Devigny’s escape from a Nazi prison. Neither a nail biting, suspense thriller nor a flag-waving glorification of the Resistance, the film focuses exclusively on authentically documenting the construction of Devigny’s instruments of escape and the rigorousness of his meticulous planning. By equating the quiet dignity of Devigny’s devotion to freedom with an introspective prayer for holy absolution, Bresson’s understated style manages to charge the film with more soul stirring emotion than a thousand epics. MMA’s film club screens famous films of art cinema from all over the world, focusing on the key works of cinema’s major directors. Each screening is introduced by a short scholarly account the film’s cultural and historical importance and followed by an open discussion. The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. The movie is free with museum membership or with museum admission. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. Before Tonight Is Over (Kým sa skoncí táto noc) Director: Peter Solan, 1965 (86 mins.) Slovak with English subtitles. Free with Museum Membership or with Museum Admission. Set during a single night in a ski resort bar and entirely improvised from the barest of character sketches, this jazzy, tragicomic film is an ensemble of the desires and disappointments of the “average” Slovakian: two female clerks who have saved all year for a spree, two young plumbers hoping to pick them up, a former war hero struggling with his daughter’s marriage, a local electrician aspiring to become an artist, and a mysteriously wealthy worker who is determined to get everyone drunk. When they all cut loose there is no telling what might get exposed. MMA’s film club screens famous films of art cinema from all over the world, focusing on the key works of cinema’s major directors.
