This is a family sky show designed with younger family members in mind. Venture along with Allison and her younger brother Michael, as they meet Jack Frost under the cold, dark, starry skies of winter. Investigate the constellations, bright stars, and spine chilling stories about the winter night sky. See if Jack can turn Michael, a very disinterested sky watcher, into an inspired observer of the treasures in the sky above. This is a 40 minute presentation, FREE and open to the public. Timothy Ferris, noted author of numerous books on cosmology, takes us into spaces on a cosmic journey through the stars of the Milky Way and onwards to the galaxies beyond. "Galaxies" is presented like a nature walk on the grandest of scales. Starting with our night sky, our journey turns to the distant stars, star clusters, and nebulae within our galaxy. The voyage of discovery continues through extra-galactic space onwards to the distant clusters of galaxies. Enhanced with original music from classical composer Kevin Braheny, this show is a treat for sky watchers. This is a 40 minute presentation, FREE and open to the public. Public shows run every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at Carr-Fles Planetarium at Muskegon Community College.    Jun 05, 2010 Pheasants Forever Great Outdoor Youth Rendezvous
Muskegon County Fairgrounds will host this event from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There are lots of free outdoor related activities to see and do for all ages. Those young people that have a hunter safety certificate are able to shoot at flying targets while nearly all others can participate in stationary shooting activities including archery, BB guns, 22 rifle, black powder muskets, turkey targets and paint ball. There will be a trout pond, sporting dog exhibits and live baby chicks hatching. Learn about fly tying, fly fishing and bait casting. Many other exhibits will be there as well. A free hotdug lunch is provided. Donations are gratefully accepted so that we can insure that this great day of learning can continue in the future. Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary will bring alligators and more to HPL. Their science program includes exotic lizards, turtles and frogs. Aug 19, 2010 - Aug 22, 2010 Two European Tall Ships Coming to Muskegon
The Bark Europa from the Netherlands and Roald Amundsen from Germany will be stopping in Muskegon August 19 - 22. Visitors are welcome to come down and tour both ships for a donation. They will be available for tours on Friday from 10:00am - 5:00pm. The Roald Amundsen will depart at 12:00pm on Saturday and the Europa will continue tours from 10:00am - 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Europa will then depart Monday morning. The two ships are in the Great Lakes as part of the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE 2010 Race to Save the Great Lakes. Both ships will be docked at 560 Mart Street in downtown Muskegon.    Aug 28, 2010 S.O.S. Muskegon - Save Our Shoreline
Everyone is invited to a Beach Cleanup and Celebration at Pere Marquette Beach 10 a.m. 12 Noon, sponsored by Muskegon Save Our Shoreline, Alliance for the Great Lakes, and Barefoot Wine. A beach cleanup with materials provided, volunteers will collect trash and catalog everything to be entered into the Adopt-A-Beach™ online database system to keep track of the litter and health of our beautiful beach. Following the cleanup, Barefoot Wine is sponsoring a celebration for our volunteers to enjoy free snacks and beverages.    Sep 06, 2010 Labor Day Community Walk
Does the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk sound like a good idea yet it’s too far away for you to participate? The City of Muskegon will be hosting the Third Annual Labor Day Community Walk to help increase the number of active people this Labor Day weekend. The walk will begin at Fisherman’s Landing. Walkers are asked to register at the pavilion at 8:30 a.m. with the walk following at 9:00 a.m. We will follow the Lakeshore Trail to the nature preserve in North Muskegon. Participants will circle around and complete their walk at Fisherman’s Landing for a total of 4.2 miles. Granola bars, water, and a raffle will be available to walkers! Back for a second summer, the DNRE and the Library of Michigan are again offering Park & Read at more than 400 libraries across Michigan. Park & Read allows library card-holders the ability to "check-out" a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This $6 savings also provides free access to the more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer. Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan's 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day-use only. Apr 08, 2010 - Oct 14, 2010 Braveheart Raptor Rehabilitation Center Public Tours
The Braveheart Raptor Rehabilitation Center will reopen for its bi-monthly Open Houses from April through October. Public tours are on the second Thursday and second Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.. In April our Open Houses will be on Thursday, April 8 and Sunday, April 11, 2010. (We will be closed Thursday, May 13). There is no admission fee. The public is invited to see our permanent, non-releasable birds. Currently we have 8 different species including an adult bald eagle, owls, a red-tailed hawk, falcons, and a turkey vulture. We are located in Muskegon County, northeast of the city of Muskegon. The Braveheart Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to rehabilitate sick, injured and/or orphaned birds of prey and return them to the wild.
