Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Witness for the Prosecution"
Only the grand dame of mystery, Agatha Christie, could have conceived of this suspenseful courtroom thriller and topped it off with a triple-flip ending. Over the strenuous objections of his private nurse, Miss Plimsoll, Sir Wilfred Robarts, a master barrister in ill health, takes on the case of Leonard Vole, a young man accused of murdering a wealthy old woman. The testimony of his wife, Christine, should ensure his acquittal, but she is called, instead, as a witness for the prosecution. For a fee, a mysterious woman provides Sir Wilfred with some damning evidence and testimony against Christine, and the plot twists and turns keep coming until the dramatic climax when Leonard and Christine confront each other in the courtroom. Tickets range from $14 - $16 and are available at the Frauenthal Box Office Monday - Friday 11 AM - 5 PM and Startickets 800-585-3737. Evening showtimes 7:30 PM Sunday Matinees 3 PM. www.frauenthal.org

The Sound of Music
When a postulant, Maria, proves to be too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain, George Von Trapp. Her rapport with the children and her generous spirit capture the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon, the newlyweds find that the Nazis have taken over Austria and now demand that the Captain report immediately for service in the German Navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains into Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides the inspirational finale. This final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become America’s most beloved musical, and many songs from the show have become standards including Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and the title song. Dearly Departed Comedic Play
In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father's funeral, the Turpin's other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion: Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son, is juggling financial ruin, a pack of no-neck monster kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their spinster sister, Delightful, copes with death as she does life, by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors add more than two cents. As the situation becomes fraught with mishap, Ray-Bud says to his long-suffering wife, "When I die, don't tell nobody. Just bury me in the backyard and tell everybody I left you." Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral. According to the NY Daily News "Dearly Departed is drop dead funny." This cast comes to White Lake from across the greater West Michigan area and beyond. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. the Howmet Playhouse, 304 S. Mears, Whitehall. For information, 231-894-4048. Tickets are $16. www.howmetplayhouse.org

Skupper Duppers- Youth Theatre Play
The White Lake Youth Theatre kids invite you on their sailing voyage in search of culture, some adventure, and excitement! Some voyages set out for exploration. Some sail for trade, and some for treasure. The schooner Skupper Dup, however, sets sail in search of folklore. When they find it, the crew is transformed into the stuff of legend—ravens and crabs, gods of the sea, players of steel band drums and blowers of conch horns. These bilingual stories are gathered from American ports of call, from Hawaii and Puerto Rico, Alaska and the Virgin Islands. The audience is no mere onlooker to the voyage. The ship is the performing area, and the crew enlists the audience in hoisting the mainsail, swabbing down the decks, and joining in the sea chanteys that set the rhythm of their work. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. the Howmet Playhouse, 304 S. Mears, Whitehall. For information, 231-894-4048. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. www.howmetplayhouse.org

Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Something's Afoot"
This murder mystery is a musical spoof of the whodunit genre, typified by Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries and the musical styles of the past. Ten people are stranded in an English country house, which is set on an island, during a raging thunderstorm. One by one they are picked off by fiendishly clever devices. While the bodies are piling up in the library, the surviving guests work frantically to uncover the identity and motivation of the cunning culprit. Performances are at the Beardsley Theater in the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts, 425 W. Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday Matinee is at 3:00 p.m. For tickets, StarTickets (800) 585-3737 or www.startickets.com or the Frauenthal Box Office (231) 727-8001. www.muskegoncivictheatre.org

West Michigan Symphony "The Romantic Road: A Passionate Journey"
It took Brahms more than 40 years before he dared to compose a symphony, and his final word on the subject is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. It’s majestic, lyrical, deep, rousing and transporting. Steeped in the traditions of Bach and Beethoven, Brahms nevertheless created a completely novel style, full of passion and longing. Wagner’s Tannhäuser expresses the tension between pure spiritual love and carnal, erotic love, in an overture that is both lyrical (some would say catchy) and triumphant. The Bruch violin concerto is the essence of Romanticism, and a worthy complement to the other two pieces on the program. Virtuosic, expressive, and full of jaw-dropping pyrotechnics, it’s the perfect showcase for a young superstar-in-the-making. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts (corner of Third and Western in Downtown Muskegon). Tickets available at the www.westmichigansymphony.org, the Frauenthal Box Office Monday - Friday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Startickets 800-585-3737. www.westmichigansymphony.org

Overbrook Theater: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
Before winning an Oscar as a writer of Shakespeare in Love, Tom Stoppard delivered another ingenious comic retelling involving the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon. In 1967 he dove into the world's most famous play, Hamlet, and retold it from the point of view of two bumbling support players. The entire world is a stage, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern play their part, finding themselves unwitting pawns in history's greatest tragedy. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Overbrook Theater is located at Muskegon Community College, 221 S. Quarterline Road. Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "The Dining Room"
This play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the room where families assembled for daily breakfast and dinner and all special occasions. The action is a series of interrelated scenes—some humorous, some poignant, some rueful—which, when taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species, the upper-middle-class. Each vignette will introduce a new set of people and events, and the actors will play a variety of roles, personalities, and ages from little boys to stern grandfathers and giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids.

Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "Always….Patsy Cline"
This musical is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife, Louise Seger. When Seger first heard Cline on the “Arthur Godfrey Show” in 1957, she immediately became an avid fan and constantly hounded the local disc jockey to play Cline’s records on the radio. In 1961, Cline went to Houston for a show, and by coincidence met Seger. The two women struck up a friendship that was to culminate in Cline’s spending the night at Seger’s house—a friendship that lasted until Patsy Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963. Over a pot of strong coffee, the two women chatted about their common concerns. When Cline finally left for Dallas, the two women exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Louise never expected to hear from Patsy again, yet soon after, Louise received the first of many letters and phone calls from Patsy. The pen-pal relationship provides much of the plot of the show. While Louise Seger provides the narrative, Patsy Cline floats in and out of the set singing the tunes that made her famous—“Anytime,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “She’s Got You,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Crazy”—to name just a few. Performances are at the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts, 425 W.

The Frauenthal Theatre is transformed into an intimate candlelit space for a concert of music from and inspired by the Baroque Era. Bach’s Brandenburg concerto no. 3 is one of the Great Master’s most enduring works. Stravinsky based his sparkling and tuneful Pulcinella Suite on the music of Pergolesi. And Richard Strauss’ Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme is a tribute to the Baroque Jean-Baptiste Lully and the playwright Molière, full of fun, inside jokes, and great beauty. Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "The Piano Lesson"
Playwright August Wilson won his second Pulitzer Prize for this haunting drama set in 1936 Pittsburgh. When Boy Willie arrives in Pittsburgh from the South in his battered truck, he dreams of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves. To raise the money for the land, he plans to sell an old piano, which has been in the Charles family for generations. While Boy Willie and his sister both own the piano, the piano is in Berniece’s living room, and she has already rejected many offers because the antique piano is more than an heirloom; it is covered with carvings that detail the family’s rise from slavery. Boy Willie tries to persuade his sister that the past is past, but she is more formidable than he anticipated.

West Michigan Symphony "Sustainability: A West Michigan Journey"
Seven generations ago, Beethoven was at the peak of his career in Vienna while missionaries and fur traders were just beginning to settle in what is now West Michigan, an area then inhabited by the Ottawa (or Odawa as native people prefer) tribe. What are we in West Michigan doing today for our seventh generation? The WMS, in partnership with GVSU, explores West Michigan’s journey toward sustainability through an evocative multi-media concert that unites spectacular images of our region’s past and present with nature-inspired music by composers such as Beethoven, Smetana, and Liadov.

West Michigan Symphony "Beethoven and Blue Jeans: Rhythmic Energy "
Kinetic energy pulsates throughout this concert. Wagner called Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony “the apotheosis of the dance,” and infectious rhythm is the hallmark of his most heart-poundingly exciting masterpiece. Rossini’s sprightly and mischievous Overture to The Thieving Magpie opens the program. As a co-commissioning orchestra, the WMS presents the Michigan premiere of the concerto On a Wire by the great American composer Jennifer Higdon (blue cathedral), written for and performed by the cutting-edge chamber ensemble eighth blackbird. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts (corner of Third and Western in Downtown Muskegon). Muskegon Civic Theatre Presents "The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat"
This delightful musical is the biblical saga of Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph, and his coat of many colors. Joseph is sold into slavery by his envious brothers and is taken to Egypt. When he rejects the amorous advances of his master’s wife, Joseph lands in jail. However, when news of his gift as an interpreter of dreams reaches Pharaoh, Joseph is on his way to success! His brothers, who have fallen on hard times, come to Egypt to seek help and do not recognize their brother. West Michigan Symphony "Chasing the Sun: From Dakness into Light"
The great Peter Tchaikovsky’s enormously powerful Fourth Symphony is one man’s response to fate and eventual triumph over his own destiny. Prokofiev’s Piano concerto no. 3, featured in the film The Competition, is one of the most devilishly difficult and puckishly enjoyable works in the repertoire. In this concert we introduce the young virtuoso Gleb Ivanov, whose pianistic prowess has dazzled audiences from coast to coast. And Chasing the Sun is a brief and brilliant orchestral showpiece from the living American composer John David Earnest, a student of Samuel Barber and a proud torch bearer of the American Romantic tradition.
