Muskegon County is home to a rich and thriving arts scene, and the Muskegon Civic Theatre (MCT) has been a cornerstone of that culture for decades. Since its formation in 1985, MCT brought together the history and talent of three former local theater groups: the Civic Opera Association, Port City Playhouse, and Muskegon Youth Theatre. This continues a legacy that dates back to the Little Theatre of Muskegon in 1935.

MCT offers a wide range of theatrical performances. Large musicals take place on the Frauenthal Theater stage, while smaller productions appear in the Beardsley Theater, the black box theater introduced in 2010, and The Frau Lounge. On average, MCT presents about 10 productions each year. The Frauenthal Theater, with its historic architecture, elegant design, and grand stage, provides a stunning backdrop for many of the large productions. The Frau Lounge hosts cabaret performances, and in 2026, MCT will also present a theatrical production there. Visitors looking for live theater in Muskegon can enjoy everything from classic plays to contemporary shows, all featuring the talents of local actors and creative teams.

Muskegon theater shows at MCT offer a memorable experience for anyone looking for things to do in Muskegon, whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or on your own.

Rising Stars: Programs for the Next Generation

MCT also supports the next generation of artists through a variety of programs. The Penguin Project gives children with special needs the chance to perform and develop confidence through the arts. The Puffin Project provides a behind-the-scenes look at theater production, from set building to costuming. MCT also hosts the Footlights Summer Program, theater workshops through the Muskegon Area District Libraries, and a variety of classes for children and youth. These programs make MCT a hub for family-friendly activities in Muskegon and highlight the county’s dedication to performing arts education.
