Muskegon County’s Commitment to Accessible Outdoor Recreation

Here in Muskegon County, we are proud to offer accessible outdoor spaces and adaptive equipment that help visitors of all abilities enjoy our 27 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and inland trails. Free adaptive beach equipment, including Mobi-Chairs (which float and roll over sand) and Action Trackchairs (battery-powered for sand and trails), are available at Pere Marquette Beach, Muskegon State Park, and PJ Hoffmaster State Park. Reservations can be made through each park’s office.

Muskegon State Park, named by National Geographic as one of the “Five Most Wheelchair-Friendly Beaches in the U.S.,” offers two Action Trackchairs and a beach wheelchair. These adaptive chairs allow visitors to explore both the sandy shoreline and wooded trails with ease.

The second Action Trackchair at Muskegon State Park was added in 2025 thanks to the dedication of local volunteers and successful fundraising efforts led by Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park, making even more outdoor adventures possible for visitors of all abilities.

Helping Everyone Reach the Beach

Mobi-Mats and Accessible Decking

Beach access is also improved through Beach-mats and Mobi-Mats at several locations, including Harbour Towne Beach on Muskegon Lake, as well as Pere Marquette Beach, Kruse Park, and PJ Hoffmaster State Park along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Kruse Park also features an accessible decking trail with a ramp that leads down to a small deck on the Lake Michigan beach. Black Lake offers an accessible kayak launch, expanding water recreation opportunities on Black Lake itself.

Building a More Accessible Muskegon

Future Developments

Ongoing improvements include the upcoming accessible playground at Smith-Ryerson Park  and a new barrier-free restroom at South Pere Marquette Beach, along with a 150-foot Mobi-Mat. Ross Park and Lake Harbor Park in Norton Shores have added ADA-compliant features, including portable restrooms, trails, and an accessible overlook deck. While Muskegon State Park’s accessible beach mat is temporarily unavailable during 2025 construction, a new ADA-compliant beach house is planned for 2026.

With these adaptive resources and ongoing improvements, Muskegon County is committed to creating welcoming, accessible outdoor experiences for all.
