Frankly, Summer Isn’t Summer Without a Chili Dog
There’s just something about a hot dog that feels like summer. Whether you’re spending the day at the beach, walking the boardwalk, or catching a ballgame at Marsh Field with the Muskegon Clippers, a good chili dog is part of the experience. It’s quick, comforting, and familiar. Some people like it simple with mustard. Others pile on chili and onions. However you top it, a hot dog just hits the spot.
A Michigan Original: The History Behind G&L Chili Dogs

Fun fact: the famous Coney Dog started right here in Michigan. For the past 100 years, Muskegon County has had its own version with G&L Chili Dogs.
Greek Roots and Local Tradition
G&L was founded in 1926 by George Baldas and Louie Coredas. They were Greek immigrants who opened the first location on Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon. Their restaurant was just one of more than 15 Greek-run eateries in the area at the time, creating a strong local food community. The original restaurant was known for its distinctive Greek chili dog recipe and lightning-fast service. Factory workers could get their food and get back on the job quickly. That speedy service continues today. Over time, G&L became more than just a lunch stop. It became a local tradition.
Grilling Up G&L’s History

Back in 1942, a young Gust “Charlie” Peliotes was selling chili dogs for just five cents. Years later, he took over the business and helped shape it into what it is today.
In 1960, Charlie and his wife Ethel moved G&L just a few doors down from the original spot. That’s also when they added french fries to the menu. This simple change quickly became a favorite.
A few years later, in 1965, G&L introduced the “Greek Special.” This combo meal paired a chili dog, fries, and a drink, making it one of the early examples of quick-service combos. The idea helped set a standard many fast food spots would later follow.
Since 1995, the Johnson family has been running G&L Chili Dogs. They’ve stayed true to the original recipes and quality while opening several new locations around Muskegon County.
What Makes G&L Chili Dogs Unique?
Even as the world changed, G&L held onto what made them special. They still use the original chili recipe, made with freshly diced onions, celery, and an 80/20 beef blend. Their hot dogs are made from lean shoulder and rib cuts of beef and pork. They contain no added sugar. Leaving out sugar helps reduce grease on the grill and keeps the hot dogs crisp and satisfying.
Celebrating a Century of Flavor and Community
Today, G&L Chili Dogs serves the Muskegon community from multiple locations across the county. The buildings may have changed, but the flavor, consistency, and warm welcome remain the same.
Whether you’ve been eating G&L since you were a kid or just found it on your way to the beach, now is a great time to celebrate 100 years of this Muskegon original. Stop in, grab a chili dog, and enjoy a taste of local history that has been bringing people together for a century.
From Greek Roots to Irish Tunes

G&L has not only satisfied generations of local appetites, but also supported cultural experiences that bring visitors to Muskegon County. Their connection to the Michigan Irish Music Festival began in 2008 as an Irish Partner. They stepped up as a Musician Sponsor in 2010 and 2011, and since 2012, have served as a Major Sponsor and proud supporter of the Cork Stage. G&L’s longstanding partnership has helped the festival grow into a multi-day event that draws thousands of visitors each year to Downtown Muskegon.
