Beach Days Made Easy with the Free Shuttle
If you’ve ever tried to park at the beach on a Saturday in July, you know the struggle. Save yourself the stress this summer because the free Muskegon Beach Shuttle is back for the 2026 season. Whether you are coming from downtown, a nearby hotel, or just want to avoid the traffic, it is one of the easiest ways to get to Pere Marquette Beach.
When Does the Muskegon Beach Shuttle Run?
The free shuttle runs weekends from May 22 through September 6, 2026. Two routes serve the area: The Tan Line connects popular beach stops along the lakeshore, and the Town Line (formerly the Blue Line) links downtown, neighborhoods, and the beach.
- Fridays: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturdays: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Sundays: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
All buses are accessible and include bike racks. Pets are not allowed, but service animals are welcome. Children under 12 must ride with an adult. Free ADA paratransit service is also available for eligible riders within three-quarters of a mile of the routes during operating hours with advance scheduling.
There is no set schedule due to traffic conditions. Riders can track the shuttle in real time using the MyBus by MATS app or text a stop number to 231-638-4445 for the next arrival time.
The Perks of Riding the Shuttle
The Beach Shuttle launched in 2025 to give residents and visitors another way to enjoy Muskegon’s lakeshore. With beach traffic continuing to grow on summer weekends, the shuttle helps reduce congestion and improve access.
Funded in part through beach parking revenue, the service supports local businesses, expands transportation options for those without a vehicle, and makes it easier for visitors to reach the lakeshore from hotels, vacation rentals, and downtown. Keeping the shuttle free to ride also makes it easy for everyone to try.
Best Place to Hop On
A great place to start your trip is the Western Avenue at 6th Street stop, located near the Visit Muskegon Visitor Center. Stop in for tips on where to go, what to see, and how to make the most of your time in Muskegon County.
Pro Tips for Catching the Shuttle
- Arrive a few minutes early during busy times to board smoothly.
- Plan ahead if you need ADA paratransit service, as it requires next-day scheduling.
- Bring sunscreen, snacks, towels, and everything you need for a beach day.
- Free street parking is available near many shuttle stops, though availability may vary during peak times.
Bonus Ideas to Maximize Your Beach Day
Don’t just hit the sand and head home. Make a full day of it. While waiting for the shuttle or after the beach, explore nearby stops like Beachwood Park, Kruse Park, or Margaret Drake Elliott Park. Visit local shops and restaurants along the route for a quick bite, souvenirs, or refreshments.
Pair your beach trip with a walk along the Muskegon Channel to the Muskegon South Breakwater Light and the Muskegon South Pierhead Light. Stop by the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, or head to The Deck for food, drinks, and live music.
Keep an eye on the water for ship spotting. You might see recreational boats, the Lake Express Ferry, Great Lakes freighters, and even cruise ships passing through. The beach and the channel are great spots to catch a view.
