Use this page to file accommodation tax returns, make payments, and access filing resources for lodging properties operating in Muskegon County.
Muskegon County's accommodation tax applies to lodging providers offering stays of 30 nights or fewer, including short-term rentals, vacation rentals, Airbnb® properties, VRBO® properties, hotels, motels, inns, resorts, and bed & breakfasts. Lodging providers are responsible for collecting and remitting the required accommodation tax and filing returns according to established reporting requirements.

Properties available for rent throughout the year are required to file accommodation tax returns monthly through the Granicus online filing system. Monthly filing provides convenient online filing and ACH, credit card or check payment options. |
Properties available for rent less than 12 months per year may file accommodation tax returns quarterly using paper filing forms and payment by check. Seasonal lodging providers may also choose to voluntarily enroll in monthly online filing through Granicus if they prefer to file electronically and manage their account online |
Preferred Filing Method: Granicus Online Filing
Granicus is Muskegon County's official online accommodation tax filing system and is required for monthly filers. Seasonal lodging providers may also choose to participate in monthly online filing. Through Granicus, eligible lodging providers can file returns, manage account information, view filing history, and submit payments by ACH, credit card or check.
Important Notice About Airbnb® & VRBO® Bookings
If you accept reservations through Airbnb®, VRBO®, or another online booking platform, contact the platform directly to determine whether taxes are being collected from your guests and where those taxes are being remitted.
Muskegon County does not currently receive accommodation tax payments directly from Airbnb® or VRBO® booking platforms. Property owners and operators are responsible for understanding their accommodation tax obligations and confirming whether taxes collected by a booking platform are being remitted to the appropriate jurisdiction.

Filing Deadlines
Accommodation tax returns and payments are due by the 15th day of the month following the reporting period. All required returns must be filed even if no taxable rentals occurred during the reporting period.
Monthly Filing Schedule
Monthly filing and payment are due the 15 of the month after the filing month. For example
January Return → Due February 15
February Return → Due March 15
March Return → Due April 15
Quarterly Filing Schedule
Seasonal lodging providers filing quarterly should use the quarterly filing schedule provided with their filing forms.
Payment Options
Online Payments
Monthly filers using Granicus may submit payments electronically by ACH or credit card, or mail payment after completing an online filing.
Check Payments
Accommodation tax payments by check should be made payable to Muskegon County CVB and mailed to Visit Muskegon 610 W Western Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49440. Include any required filing documentation or invoice with your payment.
