Local Registration & Licensing Requirements
Muskegon County collects and administers the countywide accommodation tax, but local governments may have their own short-term rental or lodging regulations. These requirements are established and enforced at the municipal level and may differ significantly from one community to another.
Depending on the municipality, lodging providers may be required to:
- Register or obtain a local license or permit
- Renew registration annually
- Complete inspections or safety certifications
- Meet zoning or occupancy standards
Visit Muskegon does not issue local licenses and cannot approve or deny municipal registrations. This page is provided as a starting point to help lodging providers identify where local requirements may apply and where to find additional information.
Being listed on VisitMuskegon.org or filing accommodation taxes with the county does not replace any local registration or licensing obligations.
What You Should Do
- Identify the municipality where your property is located
- Review local lodging or short-term rental regulations
- Contact your city, township, or village directly if you have questions
- Muskegon County is not able to advise on, approve or deny municipal requirements.
Many cities and townships within the County have their own short-term rental (STR) registration or licensing requirements. These local registrations are separate from the County tax filing process. Below, you’ll find links to municipal STR guidelines where available.
